LinkedIn Beyond Job Hunting

Nobesuthu Mahlangu

My name is Nobesuthu Mahlangu, and I hold three academic qualifications: a Degree and an Honours
degree in Industrial Sociology and Labour Studies from the University of Pretoria, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Labour Law from the University of Johannesburg. Beyond my academic background, I am deeply passionate about LinkedIn, not merely as a social platform but as a powerful tool that can truly change lives.

My LinkedIn journey started in my final year of study while I was searching for an internship. Like many graduates at the time, I was impacted by COVID 19. Opportunities were scarce, and despite my efforts, I was unable to secure an internship. I found myself torn between continuing my studies and looking for employment, so I chose to do both. The pressure to secure an internship before graduating created immense stress and uncertainty.

After weeks of questioning whether LinkedIn was worth my time and even deactivating my account, I eventually made a deliberate decision to fully commit to the platform. That decision became a turning point in my life. When I returned to LinkedIn, I did not rush into posting or selling. Instead, I dedicated time to learning how the platform works, focusing on personal branding, content creation, networking, and visibility.

Six years later, that commitment has led to outcomes I never imagined possible. Through LinkedIn, I have inspired more than 200 people to begin building their personal brands. I have been featured on New York Times Square and nominated as one of the Favikon Top 20 in South Africa for 2024 and 2025, becoming the youngest nominee in 2024. I have also received international recognition, including a nomination in Nigeria and a blog feature in Canada. In addition, I built a business through LinkedIn that enabled me to pay back my tuition fees.

One of the most valuable lessons LinkedIn taught me is that graduates do not need to wait for permission to succeed. You do not have to sit with your degree and wait for an internship to begin creating opportunities.

Beyond my personal achievements, I have used LinkedIn to help others gain the confidence to post, share their stories, and show up authentically. I have led three initiatives focused on empowering individuals to use LinkedIn more effectively. I have also facilitated sessions helping people build their presence on the platform.

Last year, I embarked on a university tour where I shared my LinkedIn journey and practical strategies at the University of Pretoria, the University of Johannesburg, UNISA Radio, TUT Radio, and various youth empowerment organizations.

My story exists to remind you that you do not have to wait for opportunity. You can create it. By using LinkedIn intentionally, confidently, and strategically, you can open doors you never thought possible.
